Strategic Energy Review at Newhaven Harbour

Sector: Coastal Infrastructure & Development
Location: Sussex Coast, UK
Status: Feasibility & Infrastructure Planning

Overview

As Newhaven Harbour prepares for major expansion—including a new quay and long-term site redevelopment—Elementum was engaged to deliver a strategic review of its energy infrastructure. The goal: ensure the harbour’s growth is underpinned by resilient, scalable, and sustainable power systems.

The Challenge

  • A private high-voltage (HV) network nearing capacity and lacking clear upgrade planning
  • Several existing solar installations, but with limited ability to export or scale
  • Planning permission granted for a renewable energy development zone, but without technical or commercial definition
  • Rising energy risk exposure as the site’s operational footprint grows

Elementum’s Role

Elementum is leading a comprehensive HV network review, including:

  • Mapping current electrical constraints and export limitations
  • Feasibility modelling for future battery storage and expanded solar generation
  • Evaluation of smart grid control solutions, including G100-compliant technology
  • Alignment of the energy strategy with Newhaven’s planning, investment, and sustainability goals

Our approach ensures the site is positioned for low-carbon growth—balancing commercial returns with long-term energy resilience.

Outcome

This feasibility work is informing broader infrastructure planning across the harbour. Once the HV upgrade strategy is confirmed, Elementum will provide a detailed roadmap for phased energy deployment and integration.
